Family Switch
A body-swap comedy with mixed critical reception.
In *Family Switch*, a 2023 Netflix fantasy comedy, the Walker family—parents Jess and Bill, plus kids CC, Wyatt, and toddler Miles—live in Los Angeles but are deeply divided. The parents want more togetherness, especially as Christmas nears, but their emotionally distant children resist. During a trip to the Griffith Observatory to see a rare planetary alignment, tensions boil over. Jess and CC, along with Bill and Wyatt, each wish the other could walk in their shoes. An astrologer named Angelica snaps a family photo just as a blinding flash erupts, and the family accidentally damages the telescope.
The next morning, everyone has swapped bodies: Jess and CC trade places, as do Bill and Wyatt. Even the family dog, Pickles, and baby Miles get mixed up. Desperate to reverse the switch, the family bribes observatory staff to speed up the telescope’s repair, hoping to use the alignment’s end to return to normal. Their attempts to live each other’s lives go badly. “Jess” (CC) ruins a client presentation by eating ice cream, triggering her mother’s lactose intolerance and causing embarrassing flatulence. “CC” (Jess) sabotages her daughter’s soccer tryout by helping an injured opponent, witnessed by a national recruiter. “Wyatt” (Bill) botches his son’s Yale scholarship interview with a laid-back attitude, while “Bill” (Wyatt) gets invited to a party by his son’s crush, Ariana.
Frustrated, the family learns the telescope needs a special lens, which won’t be available until after the alignment ends—and the next one won’t come until 2162. “Bill” calls in a favor to get the lens early. Meanwhile, “Wyatt” reluctantly attends Ariana’s party with “CC,” where he fumbles a romantic moment but stands up to a bully. The four family members share a brief, warm moment together, but it sours when “Bill” learns “Wyatt” rejected Ariana. The next day, each family member gains new perspective: “Jess” sees her mother’s work sacrifices for her soccer career; “CC” discovers her daughter’s academic dedication; “Bill” learns his father gave up music to be a parent. Accepting their situation, they decide to stick together and perform at Bill’s music concert, which impresses Jess’s clients and earns her a promotion.
The special lens finally arrives, and the family races to the observatory with Angelica’s help. But “Bill” slips and breaks it. They then realize toddler Miles had pocketed

Reader's Guide
Family Switch represents a modern entry in the body-swap comedy genre, a staple of family films. Its significance lies in its adaptation of a children's book and its release as a Netflix holiday offering. The film received mixed reviews, with a 47% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 37 out of 100, indicating generally unfavorable reviews. Critics noted its great cast and moderately heartwarming moments but criticized its unimaginative take on the body-swap gimmick. Owen Gleiberman of Variety wrote that the film 'has bits and pieces of amusement, but mostly you want to swap it for a better movie,' while Angie Han of The Hollywood Reporter called it 'completely and totally innocuous.' The film's legacy is as a passable, if unremarkable, holiday family comedy that failed to break new ground.
